CARF Accreditation Readiness

Increasingly, behavioral health organizations around the world are seeking to distinguish themselves by adopting an external measure of high quality, person-centered services. Many organizations are becoming internationally accredited and are choosing the Commission for Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) accreditation as the most relevant and meaningful method of demonstrating their quality to the persons served and to community stakeholders.

The NC EBP Center provides the coaching, technical assistance and guidance for a successful accreditation experience. Our consultation services provide assistance in developing required policies, procedures, plans and documents. Different levels of consultation services are available, so you can choose the particular level of consultation that meets your individual needs.

GETTING ACCREDITED: TRAINING, CONSULTATION, AND TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE IN PREPARING FOR CARF BEHAVIORAL HEALTH ACCREDITATION
The North Carolina Evidence Based Practices Center is pleased to provide a comprehensive, consultative approach to helping organizations prepare for national accreditation with the Commission for Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF). There are no shortcuts. Building a system of quality, value and a person-centered approach to the delivery of behavioral health services requires planning, education and a full review of all administrative and service delivery aspects of your organization. This four step approach will provide your organization the training, tools and coaching in order to have a successful accreditation survey and most important, put in place those systems that will provide the highest quality and value to the person served. If you have already had a survey or you are planning for a re-survey, this process will establish a firm foundation for moving forward.

LEVEL 1: ONE DAY ON-SITE TRAINING AND READINESS REVIEW
Consultants will provide a one day training and readiness review to include topics such as the Rehabilitation Approach to Quality, The Accreditation Process, How To Prepare for Accreditation, How To Get a Three Year Outcome and completion of a Readiness Review. This can serve as the beginning of survey preparation or as an assessment of agency service conformance with CARF standards.

LEVEL 2: ONGOING COMMUNICATION, COACHING, AND GUIDANCE ACCREDITATION PREPARATION TOOLKIT
Organizations will be provided a toolkit which includes an assortment of key guidance documents to include sample forms, sample policies and plans, documentation preparation checklists, and typical interview questions. Consultants will work as a personal accreditation coach with weekly guidance tips, ongoing emails, telephone calls and monthly conference calls on mutually agreed upon topics. As policies, procedures and plans are developed they are submitted to the coach for review and comment from a surveyor perspective insuring that all documentation meets the CARF standards. The consultant will also assist with the survey application completion. Agencies should allow 6-8 months to complete work in this level.

LEVEL 3: ON-SITE PRACTICE SURVEY, PRACTICE SURVEY REPORT, AND RECOMMENDATIONS
Consultants come on-site and conduct a practice survey just like the actual survey. The Practice Survey includes document and facility review and staff interviews. Agencies will receive a sample report with recommendations so it will be very clear what more needs to be done to have a successful accreditation survey. In addition, consultants will remain in ongoing contact with clients until the day of the survey. This level is scheduled after the survey date is established. It is recommended that it take place approximately a month prior to the actual survey.
